Folio, measuring 525 x 410 mm, full red leather binding, gilt decoration and coat of arms on upper and lower boards, edges gilt, marbled endpapers. The work comprises an introduction (pp. 1-4), detailed notes on the plates (pp. 5-14), an engraved map of Egypt and Nubia, followed by 83 salt paper prints illustrating the architecture and topography of Egypt. There is also an engraved plan of Karnak (plate 42 bis), marking the viewpoints from which the photographs of this site were taken. The photographs cover Teynard's journey up the Nile from Cairo to the First Cataract at Aswan. The work was originally issued in parts and the livraison wrappers (1-17) are bound in at the end of the volume: these supply the information that the parts, each containing five plates, were to be issued weekly over 32 instalments. It also states that individual prints could be purchased for 6 francs each. The prints are laid on pre-printed card mounts, one to a page (recto only). The majority of the prints also bear the photographer’s stamp, a small oval enclosing the conjoined initials ‘TF’ in blue-green ink at the bottom left corner (present except on plates 4, 8-9, 11-12, 15, 21, 23, 25-26, 28, 30, 33, 40, 44-45, 48-49, 52, 54, 58, 62, 68-69, 74-77, 79). In addition to the individual title for each plate, the mounts are also printed at the head with the overall title ‘Égypte’ and publisher details immediately beneath the image. A Catalogue Raisonné’ (Hans Kraus, New York, 1992), p. 203, note 2.As noted above, the photographs were first issued in 32 parts by the publishers Goupil et Cie, commencing in 1853; by October of that year twenty instalments had appeared (Howe 1992, p. 202) and continued, presumably into early 1854. The complete work was then later issued by Goupil in 1858 in two volumes (for second volume, see 74/Cup.652.m.2/2) and priced at 1000 francs. Howe’s inventory of known copies (Howe 1992, p. 204) indicates that the edition must have been small, since only eleven complete copies have so far been traced, the majority in French museums or libraries, three in private hands, one at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the British Library copy. A number of other collections hold incomplete copies or a substantial number of individual plates.
