Le Kaire. Mosquée d'Amrou. Intérieur. Côté du sanctuaire. [Interior of the Amr Ibn al-As Mosque, Sanctuary side, Cairo.] Photographer: Teynard, Félix
- Scope & Content:

Genre: Architectural Photography
[This mosque, situated in old Cairo, some distance from the modern town, is considered to be the most ancient surviving Islamic place of worship: it was founded in the year 21 Hegira (642 A.D.), by Omar’s general, Amr Ibn al-As; however, it has been enlarged and restored at different periods and it is therefore difficult to date these ogival arches. Ancient columns found during the conquest of Egypt were used in its construction; these are all monolithic, but of varying height and different types of marble, and capitals, bases and pedestals have been incorporated to provide a consistent height of 5 metres. The interior court forms a square, 80 metres on each side: the photograph shows about four-fifths of the sanctuary side. The interior of this mosque is strongly reminsicent of a catholic cloister; a mosque is effectively composed of a rectangular court, with an ablution fountain in the centre, surrounded by covered areas to shelter the faithful from the rain, or rather the sun. A minaret, which the chanting muezzins climb to remind believers of the hour of prayer; and a dome above the tomb of the founder or a major benefactor, normally complete the building.]
