View looking across the cemetery, with an open-sided arched monument prominent in the foreground: 'Ce cimetière, le plus important du Kaire, contient un grand nombre de monuments funéraires plus ou moins considérables. On peut remarquer que chaque tombe est surmontée de deux pierres verticales, irrégulièrement cylindriques: l’un indique la tête; l’autre, un peu moins haute, est placée sur les pieds du croyant, qui doivent être tournés du côté de la Mecque.' [This cemetery, the most important in Cairo, contains a great number or more or less massive funerary monuments. One may note that each tomb is covered by two roughly cylindrical stones: one indicates the head; the other, slightly smaller, is placed over the feet of the believer, who must be turned to face in the direction of Mecca.]
