Djîzeh (Nécropole de Memphis). Sphinx et Pyramides. [The Sphinx and Pyramids, Giza (Necropolis of Memphis).] Photographer: Teynard, Félix
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Archaeological Photography
View from the east, looking towards the Sphinx, with the Pyramid of Chephren (Khafra) in the left background and a small portion of the Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) visible at th extreme right: 'À gauche, la pyramide de Chéphren; à droite, une petite partie de la grande pyramide. [The Pyramid of Chephren is on the left, with a small part of the great pyramid at the right. The ground, which is nothing but the bedrock itself, seems to have been flattened to seat the pyramids on a level surface, and the sphinx, which forms part of this bedrock, and on which one can see all the stratification, was formed in relief during this massive excavation. The top of the hindquarters scarcely appears above the invading sands of the desert, which completely cover the legs of this monolith, whose measurements are gigantic: the head rises no less than 13 metres above the surrounding land; the length from chest to rear is 39 metres; the circumference of the head 27 metres, measured from the height of the forehead. A temple was discovered carved in the bedrock between the forelegs. The sphinx is turned to face the rising sun, but is not oriented precisely.]
