Djîzeh (Nécropole de Memphis). Pyramide de Chéops (Grande Pyramide). [The Pyramid of Cheops (the Great Pyramids), Necropolis of Memphis, Giza.] Photographer: Teynard, Félix
- Scope & Content:

Genre: Archaeological Photography
[The sides of this monument are very precisely aligned to face the four cardinal points. It is a royal tomb; but the opening that can be seen in the photographed face is only the result of excavations, and the passage leading into the interior of the pyramid is situated on the north face, directly opposite to this. Travellers disagree about the exact height of the structure. It appears to be 139.12 metres high, but it now lacks at least two levels; the length of each side of the base being 232.75 metres, it is necessary to travel nearly a kilometre to walk round it, and one is astonished that it takes at least ten minutes. The effect of this gigantic structure does not correspond to its height, which is more than double that of the towers of Notre Dame at Paris. This is due to the absence of detail, the lack of aerial perspective owing to the clarity of the air, and especially to the inclination of the face of the monument: from the point from which the photograph was taken, about 170 metres from the pyramid, it is not necessary to raise one’s eyes more than one would to view a vertical building 82.60 metres situated on the base nearest the viewer. Climbing the pyramid is very laborious; it is necessary to clear 203 levels, each of which is at least 68 centimetres high: this is done with the help of Arabs, who climb up with great agility.]
