Djîzeh (Nécropole de Memphis). Pyramide de Chéphren [Pyramid of Chephren, Necropolis of Memphis, Giza]. Photographer: Teynard, Félix
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Archaeological Photography
[This pyramid, somewhat smaller than the preceding, is known as the second pyramid. It is particularly noteworthy for the granite cladding that is still visible at the summit. It is presumed that this casing, which makes the tiers of the pyramid disappear, formerly extended to the bottom, and that the great pyramid was also covered in the same way. The geometric shape, when complete, accords much more closely to the description that has come down to us from Herodotus. It is possible to enter this pyramid, as one can the great pyramid.
Next to this pyramid, the traveller finds another, smaller pyramid and several more smaller pyramids, probably royal funerary monuments, or, according to Diodorus of Sicily, the tombs of queens. Then, to the west of the Great Pyramid of Cheops, one finds a large quantity of rectangular tombs, perfectly oriented in the same manner as all the pyramids.]
