View of groves of date palms growing along the bank of the Nile, with lateen-rigged boats moored in the distance. With accompanying note: 'Au milieu des dattiers du fond, on voit l’effet general d’un village arabe, et, mieux que dans la planche précédente, on se rend compte du peu de hauteur des habitations. Sur le Nil, le vent généralement regnant est celui du nord, très favourable à la navigation de remonte, qui se fait habituellement à la voile; mais, pour vaincre le courant, il faut déployer beaucoup de toile, et les barques ont des vergues énormes, comme on peut le voir à la droite de cette planche. Quelques-unes n’ont qu’un mât; les plus grandes en ont deux, munis chacun d’une seule vergue, et, dans ce dernier cas, le croisement des voiles égales, mais placées en sens in verse, les fait ressembler à d’immenses goëlands glissant sur les eaux.'
