General view of a group of houses. With accompanying note: 'La planche représente une maison de ville placée près du fleuve, au port de Syout. Le soubassement est de briques cuites recouvertes d’un enduit à la chaux; le reste de la maçonnerie, où la terre est employée comme mortier, est de briques crues, c’est-à-dire composées de limon du Nil et simplement séchées au soleil. Les planchers et les terrasses sont supportés par des troncs de dattiers. Eu égard à l’absence de pluies, ce genre de constructions dure fort longtemps, et le ton gris qui les distingue n’est pas désagréable dans un pays où l’oeil est volontiers fatigué par la lumière éclatante du soleil.'
