View of bas-relief decoration on the south wall of the mammisi or birth house of the Temple of Hathor. The term 'mammisi', coined by Champollion, describes the small temple buildings attached, often at right angles, to the main temple buildings of many major Egyptian sites. With accompanying note: 'Auprès de chaque temple existait un petit édifice auquel on a donné le nom de mammisi. Celui que représente cette planche se trouve, en grande partie, enfoui sous des débris d’habitations; les sculptures sont en relief dans le creux, comme celles du grand temple. Si l’architecture de Dendérah est magnifique, les détails sont d’un très mauvais style; la sculpture a conservé traditionellement ses formes, mais elle a été modifiée d’une manière malheureuse au contact de la civilisation grecque et romaine qui a modelé des types religieux, au lieu de leur laisser toute leur simplicité.'
