View of the Delhi Gate from inside the fort: 'The ground inside the fort is considerably elevated from that outside, and from the Tirpolia, whence the entrance by the Delhi Gate commences, the ascent is steep, difficult, and very inconvenient; the interior of the Gateway represented in this Plate has necessarily much less elevation than the exterior, but it is simple in design, and imposing in effect ... The flag staff which surmounts the Gateway, though adding nothing to the picturesque of this fine mass of buildings. has for more than half a century borne the Union flag—the emblem of British supremacy in India.'
