Picturesque views in the North-western Provinces of India. Photographed by John Murray. M.D. &c. With descriptive letter-press by Major-General J. T. Boileau, F.R.S. F.R.A.S. Late Commandant of the Bengal Engineers, and Chief Engineer of the North-west Provinces. Photographer(s): Murray, John
- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: London: published by J. Hogarth, 5, Haymarket. 1859
Red folio quarter-leather and buckram volume measuring 552 x 387 mm, with title page, half-title, 12 pp. of descriptive letterpress and 26 salt prints mounted one to a page (recto only). The album has sustained some water damage in the past and a number of prints are in poor condition as a result of staining and mould. The album was conserved and rebound in 2006. 25 of the prints are mounted on individual leaves, the remaining print is pasted down onto the titlepage. Apart from the titlepage print and plate 5, all the prints are mounted within false plate-marks and bear the following legend lithographed onto the mount: 'Photographed by J. Murray, M.D. Published by J. Hogarth, 5, Haymarket, London, Dec. 1, 1858.' Plates 2, 3, 5, and 7 are indistinctly signed in the negative. These views form the second series of photographs by Murray which were published by Hogarth. For a copy of the first set, issued as 30 loose prints with a small accompanying booklet of descriptive text by J. Middleton, entitled 'Photographic views in Agra, and its vicinity' (J. Hogarth, London, 1858), see APAC Photo 101.
