A Hindoo Mut'h [at Mathura]. Photographer: Murray, John
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
'This plate represents part of a bazaar in Muttra, with a small Hindoo Mut'h or temple, and its usual accompaniment, a long bamboo pole carrying a little flag, also waterpots on a platform, where the thirsty traveller is supplied with a refreshing draft by the occupant Fakeer. The peculiar archway constructed with three stones, forming a gateway to the mut'h, is not of uncommon occurrence, and several may be seen among the temples at the bathing ghat called Bisrant, at the North-east angle of the Fort at Agra. The figure seated on the small mound at the centre of the picture will be readily recognised by the friends of the talented photographer of these views as a truly characteristic representation of John Murray, M.D.'
