View looking over the rooftops of the palace, towards the lake below: 'It will be observed that while in the West a temple or a palace is usually a single structure, in the East it is a collection of separate buildings. Thus the picture gives only a small part of the Wan shou Shan ... (Longevity Hill) or New Summer Palace. This palace, with the Old Summer Palace Yüan ming Yüan half a mile away, was formerly the Imperial residence during most of the year. It was built by Ch'ien Lung but was more or less destroyed by the Allies in 1860, and remained in ruins until 1889, when the Empress Dowager rebuilt it...Full advantage of the site has been taken — a hill-side by the lake; and the coloured tiles of the roofs, the variety of buildings and the splendid landscape gardening have made a Paradise rather than a palace. The building seen in the foreground is the Bronze Pavilion, of which another view is given in No. XXXV...'
