Marble gate at Chü Yung kuan. Photographer: Mennie, Donald
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
View of a man with laden donkeys, passing through the archway: 'It is an arch rather than a gate, and a glance shows that it is very beautiful and that it is not all in Chinese style. Chü Yung Kuan...is a few miles beyond Nank'ou, close to the Great Wall, and the name probably means 'the town where they lodged the workmen.' Here Genghis Khan fought and won a battle. The arch of marble was put up in 1345; but it is uncertain whether it commemorates the victories of the Mongols or was put up on general principles in honour of Lamaism. Besides the remarkable 'trimmings' which are clearly seen in the picture there are low relief carvings under the archway itself; and still more interesting and precious there are six inscriptions in as many languages — Chinese, Mongol, Tibetan, Uigur, Sanskrit and the exceedingly rare script of the Si-hsia language.'
