The Temple of El-Karnak, from the south-east. Photographer: Frith, Francis
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
View looking towards the ruins of the hypostyle hall of the Temple of Amun-Ra, with a fallen obelisk and Arab figures posed beside a donkey in the foreground. A camera on a tripod can be seen on the extreme left of the photograph: 'The present view embraces somewhat more than the south-western half of the great hypostyle hall, seen from behind. Immediately in front lies the apex of the fallen and broken obelisk of the pair set up by Queen Amen-numt; its standing fellow is woithout the view to the right. The smaller obelisk of Thothmes II., nearer to the hall, is just included. The lofty double range of columns commencing near this obelisk forms the central avenue of the hall; to the left are seen six ranges of lower columns, forming the side-avenues. When we remember that the former are sixty-six feet in height, we realize the vast size of the stones used in their construction, and those which roof the hall. The chief characteristic of the scene is the utter ruin which has overtaken this once magnificant temple, a ruin so great, that it is scarcely possible to believe it can have been effected by the hand of man...'
