Egypt, Sinai, and Jerusalem: a series of twenty photographic views by Francis Frith ... With descriptions by Mrs. Poole and Reginald Stuart Poole. Photographer(s): Frith, Francis
- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: London: James S. Virtue, City Road and Ivy Lane [1860].
Elephant folio volume measuring 760 x 550 mm, quarter bound in red leather and buckram (modern binding); unpaginated, 1 p. preface and 20 large albumen prints from wet collodion negatives mounted one to a page on verso, with one page of explanatory letterpress accompanying each image. From the preface: 'This series of photographs is a selection of the most interesting of the large views taken by Mr. Frith in the East. The subjects are scenes in Egypt, the Peninsula of Sinai, and at Jerusalem. The selection has been made with a regard to artitic and historical interest, as well as to mechanical excellence ... Artitistically considered, we think that the series is well worthy of careful study. We are disposed to give the first place to the views of Mount Serbal and the so-called Mount Horeb. The manner in which the forms are given, and the successful rendering of the distance in both, at once seize the eye, which is not unused in art to flat, sketchy mountains, and in photography to the absence of aerial perspective ... The views of Jerusalem and Cairo are examples of that delicate detail in a confused subject which a human hand cannot obtain. The series representing the Pyramids, especially interesting for its completeness, is noticeable as showing the same mastery of detail which is one of the chief merits of photography ... The object of the descriptions has been, in the first place, to explain, as clearly as possible, the views to which they relate, and then to indicate the historical associations of the monuments or scenery represented. When there has been space, such general remarks on questions of art as were naturally suggested by the photographs have been added.'
