Side view of the Sphinx at Giza, with the Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops) beyond: 'The two most famous Egyptian monuments are the Great Pyramid and the Great Sphinx. The one is distinguished as the most gigantic work of its kind, a giant rising above a generation of giants; the other is a solitary wonder, of which the meaning was long hid in mystery. The point from which the view is taken is in the sandy tract to the southward of the Sphinx, which is not far distant from the spectator. The nearest angle of the Great Pyramid is the south-eastern, and the eastern and southern sides are those here presented.'
