The first of two diaries kept by William Raban, a Captain in the Bengal Army, during his furlough in England 1803-1804. The diary recounts Captain Raban's visits, attendances at events and travels during that period.
Events attendend include exhibitions, masked balls, fireworks, the opera, dinners, meetings with friends and numerous plays and theatre productions throughout the country. Also detailed are his trips to Bath and Cheltenham to take in the waters there for his health, and his travels around Derbyshire and the Birmingham area.
Other matters discussed in the diary include his father John Caspar Raban's finances and affairs; meetings, letters and conversations with his sister Betsy (Elizabeth Raban, later Severs); and arrangements for his son Charles Fitzherbert Raban (usually referred to as Charles or Herbert) to obtain a commission in the marine service.
