Journal of A Voyage to India and Two Months Residence in that Country, Vol. 1.
- Scope & Content:
-
The first of two diaries kept by Lydia King Baker, later Raban, of her voyage out to India with her mother Lydia (nee King) and youngest sister Sophie, to join her father John Baker, a surgeon for the East India Company. The diary covers the period 5 Aug 1840-15 Nov 1840, although the entries start on the 15th August, with Lydia recounting events from the 5th August until that date in her first entry.
The diary describes daily life on board the Maidstone and includes details about her fellow passengers, the Captain and Crew of the ship, events such as concerts and fancy balls which were organised on board, the weather and bouts of illness, and the various seabirds and sea creatures seen during the voyage.
From the 21st August onwards her entries also include the longitude and latitude of their location, the distance travelled each day and the temperature.
