The second of three diaries kept by Lydia King Baker, later Raban, of her voyage out to India to join her father John Baker, a surgeon for the East India Company. The diary entries cover 15 November 1840 to 19 January 1841.
The diary starts with the Maidstone's arrival in India and their arrival in Calcutta where they remained with Frederick James Halliday and his wife Eliza until 5th December. The journal recounts their travels around Calcutta including visits the Botanical Gardens and Library; visits paid to old and new friends and dinners and entertainments including dancing at Government House.
From the 5th to 15th December the diary details the trip up river to their home at Noacolly, also written asNoakhallee [Noakhali], and from the 15th December until the last entry on 19 January 1841 the diary recounts her daily life at their home and her friendship with Robert Birch Garrett and his wife Sarah.
The inside back cover also includes an inscription dated 12 August 1846 by Ellen Baker, younger sister to Lydia.
