Diary of life in Noacally [Noakhali], India
- Scope & Content:
-
The third of three diaries kept by Lydia King Baker, later Raban, of her voyage out to India to join her father John Baker, a surgeon for the East India Company. The diary entries cover 19 January 1841 to 12 April 1842 and describe her life in Noacally [Noakhali] and a visit to Calcutta in December 1841. Included in the entries are details and descriptions of the preparations for, and marriage of, Miss Matilda Sarah Jackson and Mr Charles Moseyh on 12 May 1841. Folio 140 include a list of engagements that Lydia attended whilst in Calcutta in December in 1841.
The diary had originally belonged to Lydia's father John Baker, a surgeon for the East India Company, and the reverse of the diary contains his memoirs of a voyage to the West Indies in the years 1817-1818. These memoirs recount John Baker's enlistment in an unsanctioned voyage to South America in 1818 to support a rebellion there against the Spanish, in which he served with the 2nd Venezualan Hussars, also known as the Red Hussars. Also included in the inside covers are pencil and ink sketches of people and coats of arms, most likely connected with John Baker's time in Venezuala.
