Durga puja. Artist(s): Sevak Ram (c.1770-c.1830)
- Scope & Content:
-
Durga puja. To the left an image of Durga on the verandah of a house before which a goat is being sacrificed in the courtyard.
Inscribed on back: ‘Doorga-Puja. A religious festival held in honour (sic) Devi, and in commemoration of her victory over the giant Doorg, in consequence of which she obtained the title of Doorga-Bhavani. This festival is celebrated in the month of Asin at the commencement of the new year. The fable of Bhavani, or the female principle, destroying the giant Doorg, under the form of a Buffalo-headed monster, is the same as the Egyptian tale of Horus slaying the river horse, and is merely allegorical of the periodical rising of the Ganges about the autumnal equinox’;’ goats, and sometimes Buffalos, are sacrificed on’ ‘this occasion. This festival is regularly kept up in Bengal, but the Hindoos of the Province of Bahar seldom engage in these ceremonies. The figure under the above represents Bhavani standing on a lion, (Mahadeva under that form) and piercing the monster with her spear. 1809.’
