Original inscriptions: ‘Kilpauk Gardens Madras 19 April 1816’
‘1. A light yellow for the first ----- at color 2. With Umber to be shown separately each scale towards the end lighter 3. The Head of Umber with a little lake & blue 4. The Ear of a white color but still keeping the natural color of brown 5. The legs with a fine light shade of Blue & Black with brown daubs 6. Under the neck black on both sides the brown and red streaks 7. The Eyes black with a fine yellow ring round and then the other shade of black as far as the eye sides’ [diagram] ‘a rough ornamental eyelid with a circular division which extends to the top of the brow (if I could so call it) 8. The head has four separate spines besides the one which runs down to the back as far as the tail which then gradually stops at certain distance to the farthest end.’
