A king in search of figs sees a troop of monkeys in a tree. He instructs his archer to fire at the monkeys. To rescue the other monkeys, Mahakapi ('Great Monkey') stretches his body across a river as a makeshift bridge. Through this deed, Mahakapi is injured and the king recognises him as an incarnation of the Buddha.
