Purchased 1981 (from the daughter of Ghulam Yazdani).

Note: Syed Ahmad was appointed by the Archaeological Department of Hyderabad State to copy the frescoes in 1915. Ghulam Yazdani in the preface to his ‘Ajanta’ (Oxford, 1930-35) writes that Syed Ahmad had received his training under Lady Herringham, who had previously spent several years in copying the frescoes for her ‘Ajanta Frescoes’ (London, 1915), and who considered that the original technique was too vigorous to be faithfully represented in a slighter medium. Syed Ahmad was appointed to try ‘to copy the frescoes with greater fidelity to the originals. Mr. Syed Ahmad’s efforts in this respect have been crowned with a fair amount of success, for his copies as regards tone are distinctly superior to those made by previous artists’.
