A page with studies of four heads, of lay Vaishnavas and their wives.
- Scope & Content:
-
A page with studies of four heads, of lay Vaishnavas and their wives. In the upper pair, the man, who wears a red Maratha turban, wears the ‘tilaka’ of the Tenkalai Shri-Vaishnavas, of white, U-shaped, extending downwards onto the nose, and a flame-like yellow ‘bindu’ within. His wife has a single red ‘bindu’. In the lower pair, the man, who wears a tall ‘kulah’ under his red turban, has a narrow yellow ‘tilaka’ with a dark red ‘bindu’ in its centre (possibly Madhva). His wife has a thin red crescent across her forehead.
Note: On the album leaf is inscribed ‘Sathani Dáséri’, but this is a mistake as ‘cattani’ and ‘dasari’ are both mendicants (for the latter see Add.Or.4379). All these heads, and those below, are represented as in oval miniatures, with the outline of the oval faintly visible in a few of them.
