24 drawings let into an album depicting sect-marks, religious types and castes.
By a Tanjore artist, c.1850.
Inscribed on paintings and throughout the album (see below).
Water-colour; size of album 26.5 by 21 cm; full-size paintings 24 by 18 cm, small ones 9 by 11.5 cm. The album is covered in green cloth, with ‘Scrap Book’ stamped on the front, and contains the bookplate of the East India and Sports Club.
Purchased 1987.
Note: The album was compiled by James Stuart Fraser Mackenzie (also referred to in his early career as Stewart James Fraser Mackenzie). He was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1860, after just over a year at Addiscombe, and spent his entire career in the Military Accounts Department of the Madras Staff Corps. He reached the rank of Lt. Colonel in 1886, and retired in 1891. The paintings were presumably acquired by Mackenzie shortly after his arrival, and mounted and written up during his working life. They are accompanied by a carbon typescript, with photographs of some of the drawings, working up the notes for publication. This typescript is entitled ‘Caste Marks of Madras’, with Col. Mackenzie’s name at the end, and ‘Col. Mackenzie, Lemington, Frensham, Surrey’ written on the front.
The paintings of standing personages are from a good standard set, while the studies of heads are more unusual. All show very clearly details of sect-marks, clothing, jewellery and other ornaments.
