Inscribed below in pencil: ‘Rahdari’; and opposite in ink: ‘Rahdari, i.e. guide to the roads, one of the village officials whose duty is to direct travellers on their way ... Ordinarily, they wear no special marks but if they get on in the world they affect either the marks of Vishnu or Shiva ... They worship “Durga”...’
