The pool at Balaju, a tank with many images and fountains laid out in the 18th century north of Kathmandu, with a British Political Officer approaching on horseback a group of Newars.
Inscribed in pencil on front: ‘Bala Ji. Flowing Tank. 2 miles north of Khatmandu;’ (on reverse:) ‘Temple. Tank with sacred fish (Nellie Lawrence’s note) 1907.’
Pencil, wash and water-colour, heightened with silver; 256 by 428 mm. within black frames.
Note: The original pencil sketch for this drawing is in the Hodgson collection in the Royal Asiatic Society (Head catalogue, 022-057).
