Charakpuja, the Hook-swinging Festival, 1831
In the centre stands a pole with two cross-pieces, from the extremities of which three devotees are suspended by ropes. A fourth stands in the foreground on the right with hooks fixed in his back ready to take his turn. The pole is surrounded by a great crowd of spectators including a Chinaman and a mounted figure.

Atkinson described this ceremony in his poem ‘The City of Palaces,’ 1824.
