ATKINSON, JAMES (1780-1852)
Atkinson entered the Bengal Medical Service in 1805 and was a Civil Surgeon until 1813. From 1813 to 1828 he was Assay Master of the Mint and for a time was Officiating Deputy Professor of Persian at the Fort William College. In 1818 he became Superintendent of the Government Gazette and of the Press from 1823 and founded the Calcutta Annual Register. In 1833 he became Surgeon to the 55th Native Infantry and in 1838 to 1841 went to Kabul with the Army of the Indus as Superintending Surgeon. He became a member of the Medical Board in 1845 and retired from India in 1847. His wife, Jane, took lessons from Chinnery in Calcutta. George Atkinson (q.v.) was their son.
