A Sati or Widow-burning, 1831
A night scene with a full moon and dark trees in the background. The corpse is lying on the lighted funeral pyre with one wife stretched beside, while another is seen approaching. A trumpet is sounding and a number of spectators, including a mounted figure, fill the foreground.

At the time this picture was painted the subject of suttee was highly topical and there was strong agitation for its abolition. In 1827 James Pegg had published ‘The suttee’s’ cry to Britain and in 1830 ‘India’s cries to British humanity’. In 1832 suttee became illegal.
Presented by the artist's son, the Rev. Canon Atkinson, 1910.
