Inscribed on mount: ‘Ameer Dost Mahomed Khan. Taken from life at Jellalabad. Novr 27th 1840 by James Atkinson. Superintending Surgeon of the Army of the Indus. Presented by the Artist’s son Rev. Canon J.A. Atkinson, M.A., D.C.L.’
Oval, pencil and water-colour; 8 by 6.5 ins.
Note: This portrait was painted when Dost Muhammad Khan (Amir of Afghanistan 1836-40) had surrendered to the British after the campaign in Afghanistan of 1839 to 1840. Foster Catalogue, no.217.
