Note: On the outbreak of the First Burma War the Burmese invaded Manipur, and the ruler, Gambhir Singh, asked the British for help. A regiment of artillery, including Manipuri troops, was sent towards Cachar and the Burmese were expelled from the Manipur valley. After peace was declared, in 1826, Manipur was declared independent. A ‘banghy’ is actually the shoulder-yoke from which baskets are suspended.
