View in the Himalaya mountains near the source of the Ganges (U.P.). A hilly landscape with the river flowing through a narrow defile; two Indian soldiers in the foreground. Artist(s): Byers, John Lawson (1785-1815)
- Scope & Content:
-
View in the Himalaya mountains near the source of the Ganges (U.P.). A hilly landscape with the river flowing through a narrow defile; two Indian soldiers in the foreground. c.1815.
Inscribed on back in ink: ‘View near the Source of the Ganges from a Sketch by Capt. Byers;’ in pencil: ‘Painted by Francis Nicholson (1753-1844). One of the founders of the Water-colour Society in 1804. The above description is his handwriting. Jas. C. Lyell 1914.’
Foster Catalogue, no.504. These drawings were attributed by Sir William Foster to ‘Francis Nicholson after Captain Byers’, presumably on the basis of the inscription. It is possible that his sketches were worked up by the Yorkshire water-colourist, Francis Nicholson (1753-1844).
