The palace of Shuja‘ al-Daula at Lucknow, with the mosque of Asaf al-Daula’s Imambara behind, taken from across the river Gumti. c.1798.
Inscribed (wrongly): ‘Ancient Palace of Emperors of Hindoostan at Lahore’. In Barton’s hand: ‘given to me by the Nawab Saadat Ali of Oudh’.
Wash; 40.5 by 67.5 cm.
Purchased 1989.
Note: The drawing shows the entire river face of the palace, and the Panch Mahal and Imambara mosque beyond. The palace facade is very similar to that in the Daniells’ view in ‘Oriental Scenery’ (III, 16), but without of course the mosque which had not yet been built in 1789 when the view was taken.
