LONGCROFT, THOMAS (fl. 1780-1811)
Longcroft's date and place of birth are unknown, but he appears to have been an artist who knew Zoffany in England. He decided to go to India with Zoffany in 1783 but they did not make the voyage together. Both visited Lucknow in 1784 but some time later separated. Longcroft purchased an estate at Koil near Aligarh (U.P.) in 1787 and became an indigo planter. He continued to sketch but appears to have given up any idea of earning a living from painting. The drawings indicate his travels throughout northern India in the 1780s and 1790s, including visits to Delhi (1786), Rohilkhand and Haridwar (1792), Lahore (1795) and Lucknow (1798). His relative, Thomas Twining, stayed a night with him in December 1794 and gives a vivid description of his eccentric character. Longcroft lived with an Indian consort, Mubarak Jahan, and died at Koil in 1811. Nearly seven hundred of his drawings were auctioned after his death and many others passed to his relatives, the Twinings.
