Inscribed on reverse: ‘Native boat on the river Ganges chiefly used for shooting the rapids. Made of 4 inflated buffalo skins with a string made bedstead across the two middle ones, where 2 passengers can sit. The two outer skins are used by the native boatmen who hold onto the centre ones by their hands & row and paddle & guide with their feet. They are very light and only 2 or 3 inches in the water which enables them to shoot the very shallow rapids where no boat could go. Sketch from nature’.
