Sir George Everest and an assistant supervising work on the Great Trigonometrical Survey.
Inscribed: ‘Raising the GTS mast. Chur. Oct. 10th 1834 Col. Everest GTS’, and on reverse: ‘Major Everest GT Survr. of India putting up Trigonl. mast on top of Chur Mtn’. On original mount: ‘Colonel Everest. Surveyor Genl. of India erecting a mast as a point for observation on the Chur Mountain height 12500 ft’.
Pencil and wash; 23.6 by 43.2 cm.
Note: Sir George Everest (1790-1866) Surveyor-General of India. Appointed Superintendent of the Great Trigonometrical Survey, 1823.
See ‘Travels’, I, p.35 ‘On the huge granite rocks that formed the very apex of the mountain, the labourers in attendance had formed a platform of loose stones, purposely carried thither, and in the centre of it they planted a mast, as a mark for the survey’.
