Born Walthamstow. Called to the Bar, Lincoln’s Inn 1824. Amateur artist and traveller. Visited America and Canada 1832; Persia, Central Asia, Afghanistan and northern India 1832-9; West Indies, Mexico and Nicaragua 1852. Published ‘Six months in America’, London, 1832; ‘A personal narrative of a visit to Ghuzni, Kabul and Afghanistan’, London, 1840; ‘Travels in Kashmir, Ladak, Iskardo and countries adjoining the mountain course of the Indus’, 2 vols, London, 1842; ‘Travels in Mexico and South America’, London, 1863. Exhibited RA 1842. Died at Woodford, Essex.

Album of 154 drawings, most made between January 1834 and June 1839, while Vigne was travelling through the Punjab hills to Kashmir, Baltistan and Afghanistan.

Drawings various sizes, many inscribed, laid down in album after their acquisition. Some inscriptions in a later hand.

Album 47.5 by 40 cm.

A further nine drawings, WD3111-3119 have been mounted separately, as are six drawings by Indian artists, Add.Or.3167-3172.
