The city of Murshidabad (Bengal) with the banqueting hall of the Nawab's old palace seen from the river.. Artist(s): Smith, Robert (1787-1873)
- Scope & Content:
-
The city of Murshidabad (Bengal) with the Nawab's old palace seen from the river.
Inscribed on mount in pencil: ‘Nawab's House at the City of Moorsedavad’.
Note: This is the Nawab's old palace (not new, as in the printed catalogue) erected by Major Fleming whom Smith assisted on his arrival in India in 1805. The small classically inspired building is the Nawab's breakfast room, where Lord Moira was entertained on his way up-river in 1814, and drawn by Sita Ram, and seen also in the drawing by Pyare Lal of 1823 in Mss Eur C476. The Nawab's new palace was begun in August 1829 on an altogether grander scale: compare William Prinsep's view in the 1830s at WD4032. Called the 'Hazari Duari' or 'Palace of 1000 Doors' it was built for the Nawab by Colonel Duncan Macleod (1780-1856), Bengal Engineers, between 1829 and 1837.
