SMITH, ROBERT (1787-1873)

Smith was in India from 1805 to 1830, in the Bengal Engineers; Lieut. 1807, serving as Adjutant 1809-16; Captain 1817; Major 1827; Lieut.-Colonel 1830. In 1810 he was Field Engineer with the Bengal Division and, after taking part in the capture of the Mauritius in 1810 to 1811, he became A.D.C. to Sir George Nugent, the Commander-in-Chief in India. In 1813 to 1814 he was surveying on the Mirzapur S. frontier. In 1814 he became Superintending Engineer in Prince of Wales Island (Penang), to which he again returned in 1818. Here he made sketches which William Daniell used for his ten engravings,’ Views in Prince of Wales Island’ (London, 1821). A set of these views was accepted by the Court of Directors 2nd August 1820. During 1814 to 1816 he was Field Engineer with a force engaged in the Nepal War. He was on leave 1819-22 and was appointed Garrison Engineer and Executive Officer at Delhi at the end of 1822; he served as Field Engineer at the siege of Bharatpur in 1825. He designed a number of buildings in India and also repaired various Indian monuments including the Qutb Minar and the Jami‘ Masjid at Delhi. He left India in November 1830, reporting his arrival in England to the Court of Directors on 29 June 1831, and formally retiring in November 1832. He retired to Redcliffe Towers, Paignton, a house designed by himself with Indian additions, as well as to the edifice subsequently known as the Château des Anglais, Nice, which he also designed himself.

Lady Nugent was a great admirer of his drawings in 1811-12. In her journal she refers to Smith.: 'Received a present of drawings from Mr. Smith, an engineer A.D.C. He draws beautifully, and his sketches are all so correct, that I know every place immediately' (‘Journal’, i, 277); 'I took the engineer officer, Mr. Smith, with me, and we projected a drawing of the line of march, which will be a treasure to me if he executes it according to my plan, and I have little doubt of its being quite perfect, by what I have seen of his drawings' (‘Journal’, i, 395).

He is not to be confused (as does the printed catalogue) with the Capt. Robert Smith who served from 1809-33 with H.M. 44th Regiment of Foot (East Essex), whose diary entitled 'Pictorial journal of Travels in Hindustan from 1828 to 1833 by Captain Robert Smith, late H.M. 44th Regt', illustrated with small drawings, is in the Indian Section of the Victoria and Albert Museum (I.M.15-1915). The East Essex Regiment was in India 1825-33. This Capt. Smith also drew various panoramas now in the Prints and Drawings Department of the V & A.

8 drawings probably made by Captain Smith on the river Ganges while on his way to join the Governor-General Lord Moira at Lucknow in 1814 prior to his service in the Nepal war. They could also be dated to Smith’s return from the Nepal War in 1815 en route to Calcutta, and to take up his new post at Prince of Wales Island. They can certainly be no later than 1822 (although the 1807 watermark would certainly suggest a much earlier date), when Smith had returned to India and went, presumably upriver, to Delhi, since he never travelled down-river again.

Oil on canvas; each 13 by 20.5 cms.

Each has ‘HBH, 1834’ scratched on the stretcher, with additionally ‘Barrackpore’ on that of F835.

Purchased 1992.

The evidence connecting these paintings with Smith is found in their being sold in 1990 (Christie’s S. Kensington Topographical sale, May 1990) as part of a group with a third painting, a view of Penang inscribed on its reverse: ‘Harbour P. of W. Island (1819)’, a view which can only have been taken by Smith. This latter is the same subject as appears in one of the views of of the island subsequently engraved by William Daniell, and is identical to these two in dimensions, canvas type, frame and other markings. It would seem therefore that these two were worked up in Penang in 1819 from sketches taken earlier in India.
