Proposed monument to Lady Canning at Barrackpore (Bengal). 1862.
Inscribed on front in pencil: ‘Sketch made for Earl Canning of a monument for Lady Canning (on board ship. 1862).’
Pen-and-ink; 10 by 14 ins.
Note: This sketch was made by Yule when returning to England in 1862. Lord Canning was on the same boat. Lady Canning had died of malaria on 18 November 1861 when travelling to Calcutta from Darjeeling. Her husband retired in March 1862 and died 17 June. Yule had made the masonry vault for Lady Canning's tomb before leaving.
