58 proof engravings by John Landseer of D’Oyly’s Indian sports series, plus one original Chinnery drawing. 1814-15.
Engravings laid down on both sides of folios forming a small album.
Album pages of laid paper watermarked ‘...IPPS’ with a crowned shield design, some (numbered between 19 and 47) with engraved dates between 12th and 23rd June 1814 and numbers and inscriptions added by D’Oyly either on the proofs or beneath, some (between 5 and 19) with Chinneryesque shorthand.
Proof engravings, various sizes, laid down on album pages 106 by 182 mm.
Original wrapping paper inscribed: ‘By the Northumberland favored by Capt. Francklin/J. Landseer Esq/Foley Street/ London/5th Decr. 1815/C D’Oyly,’ with wax seal, and watermarked: ‘S & C Wise.’
Note: The ‘Northumberland’ under Capt. John Francklin sailed from The Downs on 3rd April 1815 for Madras and Bengal, and returned to England on 16th July 1816.
