21 drawings of Indian sports on tracing paper, taken from the subjects of D'Oyly's albums WD4405-4406.. Artist(s): D'Oyly, Sir Charles (1781-1845)
- Scope & Content:
-
21 drawings of Indian sports in pencil on brown tracing paper, some simply tracings, others more worked up, taken from (or from a further series of exemplars of) the corresponding subjects in WD4405 and 4406, two albums of water-colours of Indian sports presented by D’Oyly to Lady Hastings apparently about 1815, and with the same numbering system and inscriptions. 1814-15.
Unlike the other two series, there is no accompanying wrapper showing that they were sent to Landseer, but since they came from a collection of material associated with Landseer, it seems likely that these tracings may represent an attempt by D’Oyly to have Landseer lithograph them. Alternatively, they may represent a stage in his own attempted lithography of these subjects, similar to actual lithographs apparently of 1822 -23 found in some of the D’Oyly albums (e.g. WD4044).
Pencil on tracing paper; 16 by 19 cm.
