Osiride pillars at Medinet Habou, Thebes. Photographer: Frith, Francis

Genre: Archaeological Photography
Close view of a massive column carved as a representation of Osiris: ' This view represents the north-west or right-hand corner of the first great court of the Temple of Rameses III., at Medinet-Haboo. It is an hypaethral (or unroofed) area of about 110 feet by 135, having, on one side, a corridor with a row of seven Osiride pillars (one of which is included in the view), and on the other, eight circular columns with bell-shaped capitals, in imitation of the papyrus ... This splendid court was, on my first visit to Thebes, almost filled with rubbish, so that only the upper portions of the columns were visible. But the figure, which I photographed on my last journey, had been uncovered by order of the Viceroy. A French artist was engaged in copying its details; and when in a few minutes I had possessed myself of more accuracy than his labour of perhaps days would yield, he exclaimed with politeness — and (let us hope) with no dash of bitterness, nor scornfulness, nor envy — 'Ah, Monsieur! que vous êtes vite, vite!''
