The 'Crawlers.' Photographer: Thomson, John
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Portrait Photography (generic types)
Portrait of an impoverished women, seated on steps in front of a doorway and holding in her arms an infant she has been entrusted to look after for a friend: 'Huddled together on the workhouse steps in Short's Gardens, those wrecks of humanity, the Crawlers of St Giles's, may be seen both day and night seeking mutual warmth and mutual consolation in their extreme misery. As a rule, they are old women reduced to vice and poverty to that degree of wretchedness which destroys even the energy to beg...' A history of the subject of this portrait, the widow of a tailor fallen on hard times, is given in Smith's accompanying description of the photograph.
