Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1 to 20, which mainly consist of correspondence relating to appointments to posts. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 1 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1 to 100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and any other papers accompanying the original letter. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures.
1. Letter from Captain R Ouseley, 34th Native Infantry, doing duty with Convalescent Depot at Landour. Asks for an appointment as Cantonment Magistrate, Landour; if not, one in Oudh will answer. With testimonials. Copy of reply, application should be made to the Lieutenant Governor of the North West Provinces. See also 70.
2. Letter from Captain R R Adams, 12th Native Infantry, Brigade Major Punjab Irregular Force, Camp, Dera Ghazee Khan. Applies for a Deputy Comissionership in Oudh. Copy of reply, no vacancy, application noted.
3. Letter from Lieutenant L'Estrange, 9th Bombay Native Infantry, Probationer Sub Assistant Commissary General, Bombay. Asks for either 2nd in Command or the Adjutancy in one of the Oudh Irregular Cavalry; states his services, with 1 enclosure. Copy of reply, no vacancy, application noted.
4. Letter from Captain A.B. Church, 9th Bombay Native Infantry, Broach. Asks for an appointment in Oudh either in a civil or military capacity. Copy of reply, no vacancy, application noted.
5. Letter from Captain C P Rigby, 16th Bombay Native Infantry, Kurrachee. Asks for an appointment in Oudh, states his services. Copy of reply, no vacancy, application noted. See also 695.
6. Letter from Baboo Ram Chund Mullick, Calcutta. Asks for the Dewanship of Government House. Copies of references. Copy of reply, no vacancy. See also 44, 153, 1323.
7. Letter from Lieutenant D M Gleig, 2nd Bombay Grenadiers, Camp, Ahmedabad. Asks for an appointment in the Oudh Contingent or any other Contingent. Copy of reply, no vacancy, application noted.
8. Letter from Captain C P Taylor, 35th Madras Native Infantry, Cannanore. Asks that General Cubbon shortly expected in Calcutta, may be asked to give him an appointment to the Mysore Commission. Endorsed no reply.
9. Letter from Lieutenant W B Girdlestone, 67th Native Infantry, Benares. Asks for return of his testimonial, and renews application for a post in Oudh. Copy of reply, testimonial returned, application noted. See also 57.
10. Letter from Lieutenant H G Raverty, Assistant Commissioner, Mooltan. Repeats his desire for a transfer to Oudh. Copy of reply, no vacancy, application noted. Endorsed Mr Raverty is a great linguist and a laborious philologist but Mr Lawrence has not been able to recommend him for promotion, and would not be sorry if he were transferred from the Punjab to some other quarter.
10a. Letter from Mr J O'Brien, Head Clerk of the Cawnpore Collectorate. Asks for an Extra Assistantship in Oudh. Copies of testimoniaIs. Copy of reply, application should be made to General Outram.
11. Letter from Captain J H Wright, 1st Madras Native Infantry Executive Officer, Public Works Department, Palkoudah near Chicacole. Repeats his application for employment in the Pegu or Tenasserim Commissions, states his services. 1 anna stamp. Endorsed Major Phayre can be spoken to when he comes up. See also 53, 144, 216, 621, 683, 700, 792, 950, 1112.
12. Letter from Bonanji Dosabhai Munshi, Bombay. Advises the despatch of a copy of a pamphlet published by him. Copy of reply, acknowledged with thanks.
13. Letter from Mr O Plowden, Commissioner of Nagpore, Seetabuldee. About Mr. Ellis' resignation of his office at Nagpore, and the consequent arrangement to fill up his place; recommends for civil employ in the Punjab Lieutenant C H E Graeme, 5th Native Infantry, as Assistant Executive Officer in Nagpore. Endorsed answered privately.
14. Letter from Sir J W Colvile, Chief Justice, Calcutta. Submits with his recommendation a letter from the Reverend F Farrer, Assistant Chaplain at Meean Meer asking for an appointment as Governor General's Chaplain. (Colvile's letter no longer in cover). Copy of reply that there is no such appointment.
15. Letter from Major C Davidson, Resident at Baroda. Writes on behalf of Lieutenant L Barton, 1st Bombay Grenadiers Native Infantry for a permanent civil appointment. Also brings to notice the names of two Duffedars of the 5th troop who did not join in the Mutiny at Bolarum, and who have been included among the lot of mutineers ordered to be dismissed. Copy of reply, suggesting an Assistantship in the Nagpore commission for Mr Barton. See also 253.
16. Letter from Lieutenant R H Tulloh, 16th Native Infantry Officiating Assistant Executive Officer, Peshawur. Makes further application for employment in the Oudh Irregular Force. Copy of reply, no vacancy, application noted.
17. Letter from Mr W Lawler, Headmaster of the Government Collinga Branch School. Offers his services for employment in the province of Oudh in any capacity. Copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, application should be made to the Chief Commissioner.
18. Letter from Civil Auditor, Fort William. Requests, that to enable him to pass Lord Dalhousie's salary bill from 1st to 29th ultimo both days inclusive, he may be informed whether it is the intention of Lord Canning to draw his salary from the last mentioned date or from the first of the present month; according to precedent Lord Canning is entitled to the salary of the day on which he was sworn in. This reference is owing to the Bengal Bank having drawn Lord Dalhousie's salary up to the 29th ultimo. Copy of reply, Lord Canning will draw from 1 March.
19. Letter from Dr C Smith MD, Assistant Surgeon, Madras Establishment, Madras. Asks for a medical appointment in Oudh; states his services. Copy of reply, no vacancy, application noted.
20. Letter from Dr A J Scott, MD, Deputy Assay Master, Madras. About the patronage of an appointment as Deputy Assay Master in Bombay. Copy of reply, office is gift of Local Government, as previously stated.
