- Title:
- Private Secretary: Letters Received
- Scope & Content:
-
This sub-series contains folders of numbered sets of correspondence, each set usually consisting of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, and any other papers. The correspondence was originally in bundles of usually one hundred sets of papers, and relates to applications for posts and various other matters. Some letters were transferred elsewhere within the administration but their covering 'docket' remains on file.
Letters are usually cross referenced with other items of Private Secretary's Correspondence in the same sequence, numbered 1-10,268. They are also sometimes cross referenced with the Registers to Miscellaneous Letters Received by the Governor General ('Governor General's Book' Mss Eur F699/1/1/1/29 & Mss Eur F699/1/1/1/30), and items from the Private Secretary's Telegrams Received and Despatched sequences (Mss Eur F699/1/2/7 & Mss Eur F699/1/2/8). Enclosures are often separated from the letters and where they survive can be found in the Private Secretary's Papers on Miscellaneous Subjects sequence (Mss Eur F699/1/2/6).
The original registers and indexes to these items of correspondence are at Mss Eur F699/1/2/1.
