Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 42 to 60, which mainly consist of correspondence relating to appointments to posts. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 1 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1 to 100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and any other papers accompanying the original letter. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Number 48 has a red cross on it, to indicate that it was not to be destroyed. Numbers 41 and 50 are missing.
42. February to March 1856. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Governor General's Agent, Central India, Camp, near Nurseyhur. Encloses a letter from Captain Eden, Political Agent at Bhopal, requiring an Assistant, and also a letter from Lieutenant Magniac, offering to do the duties of an Assistant in addition to his own duties; and asks whether an official application for an Assistant, to the Political Agent at Bhopal would succeed. Other details. Copy of reply, asking for further details.
43. March 1856. Letter from Dr W B O'Shaughnessy, Superintendent, Electric Telegraph, Calcutta. Acknowledges receipt of Lord Canning's letters and promises not to delay in Constantinople. See also 37.
44. March 1856. Letter from Baboo Ram Chund Mullick, Calcutta. Acknowledges receipt of letters of 3 March, asks to be considered for a vacancy in the future, and asks for an audience. Copy of reply, application noted, audience refused. See also 6, 153.
45. March 1856. Letter from Mr J S A H Byrne, Calcutta. Asks for temporary employment until he joins the Cavalry police for the Sonthal districts. 2 copies of his credentials. Copy of reply, no suitable vacancy known. See also 62, 108.
46. March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant G F S Browne, 24th Madras Native Infantry, Deputy Commissioner 2nd Class in the Saugor and Nerbudda territories with the superintendence of the Chunderee district, Chunderee, Lulutpore. Asks for a position in the Punjab or Oudh Commissions, encloses copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, asking for further details. Copy of letter to Mr W Muir, Secretary, to Government Agra, asking for details about Browne. See also 113, 211, 481.
47. March 1856. Copy of reply to Lieutenant G Adey, 31st Madras Native Infantry, Adjutant 2nd Regiment Hyderabad Contingent, Ellichpore. Acknowledges receipt of his application for the office of 2nd in Command of the 2nd Regt. of Infantry, Hyderabad Contingent.
48. March 1856. Letter from Mr C B Skinner, Calcutta. Introduces Mr T L Owen, Commercial Agent of the King of Ava, who would like an interview with the Governor General. Copy of reply, to T L Owen Esquire granting an interview.
49. January to March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant W Rose, 25th Bombay Native Infantry, Ahmedabad. Anxiously awaits tidings of his appointment. Also letter of January - about his Staff appointment. Endorsed: in orders of 27 February was appointed Adjutant of 7 Infantry Gwalior Contingent.
51. March 1856. Letter from Captain A Teman 3rd Native Infantry, Deputy Commissioner 1st class Saugor and Nerbudda territories. Asks for advancement in the Civil Department, with copies of references. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 300, 9610. Governor General's Book 2135
52. March 1856. Letter from Captain C B Young, Civil Architect, Calcutta. Forwards for signature completion certificates for 3 inch earthen wall pipes fixed in lieu of spouts to the Out Offices of the Government House (no longer enclosed).
53. March 1856. Letter from Captain J H Wright 1st Madras Native Infantry, Executive Officer Public Works Department, Palkondah, Chicacole. Not having received a reply to his application of 12 January for an appointment either in the Tenasserim or Pegu Commission, repeats his request. 1 anna stamp. Copies of 3 replies, he is to be employed in connection with the Tounghoo Road. See also 144, 11, 216, 621, 683, 700, 792, 950, 1112.
54. March 1856. Letter from Messrs. Harraden and company, Music Ware House, Calcutta. States that since 1850 they have been allowed by Lord Dalhousie to style themselves Musical Instrument and Music sellers to his Lordship; and hope Lord Canning will allow them the same privilege.
55. March 1856. Letter from Ensign A W Cripps, 26th Native Infantry, Meean Meer. Asks for civil employ, either in the Civil Department, or in the Punjab Irregular forceCopy of reply, application noted.
56. March 1856. Letter from Judoonath Sein, late a clerk in the Government Treasury Office, Kumowllee. Offers to turn Queen's Evidence against a man who had been again employed in a Government office after his imprisonment for embezzlement in another Government public Treasury.
57. March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant W B Girdlestone, 67th Native Infantry, Benares. Returns thanks for acknowledgement of his application for employment. See also 9.
58. March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant L Clarke, 37th Native Infantry, Officiating Executive Officer, Sylhet Division, Sylhet. Asks to be transferred to the Barrackpore Brigade Majorship which is about to become vacant.
59. February to March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant A G Tod, 1st Madras Light Cavalry, Bangalore. Asks for employment either in the Punjab, Oudh, or Hyderabad Commissions. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 176.
60. February to March 1856. Letter from Captain H T Campbell, 2nd Assistant Civil Engineers, Public Works Department, Madras. Asks for civil employment in Oudh. Four 1 anna stamps.
